Your guide to

Waterkeeper Reading Room

Want to learn even more about the issues that affect water quality in Southwest Florida? There's a wealth of information available to you.

We've assembled this list of titles that we hope will satisfy your curiosity no matter what your interest.

And we didn't limit it to pure science, although there's a substantial list of titles covering everything from wetlands ecology to beach dynamics.

Some years back, we invited Al Burt, the Miami Herald's roving state columnist, to address a group here in Naples. We asked him to recommend a reading list for new residents, a selection that would help newcomers to the region appreciate the history, culture, and ecology of our state. The letter at the left is what he sent us.

There's a reason we lean heavily on the history and culture. Unless our new neighbors recognize the unique geology, hydrology, and ecology of their new home, they will be ill-prepared to support policies that protect it.  They won't know which candidates to support or what to make of the competing arguments that attend nearly every "improvement" a governing body or private interest seeks to advance.

If you read everything on the list you'll be better informed about Southwest Florida than most of the people deciding its fate. But your eyes might start glazing over, too. That's why we've added a special section of Florida-based fiction. Some of the titles show up on Al's list at the left, but we've supplemented those with enough to occupy you for a whole season of beach days. Enjoy.
